The Inside Tip
July 2010
Did you know that Microsoft® SharePoint® has a versioning feature that allows you to store, track and restore items in lists
and files in libraries as they change? Many organizations find versioning especially useful when project teams are large, or
when documents require many review cycles.
Versioning can be utilized in all default list types: calendars, lists, libraries and web part pages.
With versioning you have the ability to:
- Record a version history — As depicted in the image above, versioning allows you to capture detailed information about the file/item,
it’s properties, in addition to how often it has been updated. Each file/item has a version history log which captures all changes – notating date,
time and the name of the modifier.
- Restore a previous version as your current version — With versioning enabled it is easy to restore a file to a previous version, should you need to recover material.
Once restored, the previous version becomes the current version.
- View a previous version — Should you need to view an earlier version for reference, you can access previous versions without
overwriting your current material.
